Orion News - 24th March 2013

Stourbridge Open

Please send back your entry forms with entry times and a cheque to me, Carla or any of the committee. If you are unsure of entry times, use the Teamer site or main website to find previous results or have a sensible guess by looking at fellow swimmers times. Collating these forms is difficult enough without having to find times.

Details such as Promoters conditions can be found on the Stourbridge website.

Swimathon Friday April 26th

Our usual Harborne pool time from 6.30-8.30pm will be have 2 lanes for the Swimathon. As well as potentially supporting a good cause it will give younger swimmers a chance to gain distance awards. Please be aware parents will have to be 'counters' for laps and my current understanding is you will need to sign up via www.swimathon.org (still negotiating this with Harborne).

Aquathon

All those interested in being involved in organising this event are invited to a meeting at KEGS on April 3rd at 6.30pm. I am very keen to have maximium input from those of you with a triathlon background (e.g. Paddy, Richard, Steve, Mike ). Note the age group limit is 4 - 80 at Carl's request.

BBQ - 12th April

Many thanks to Barnie for once again allowing us back to Weoley Hill CC for our annual BBQ on 12th July 2013. More details to follow shortly.

Lifeguarding course

This will start on Wednesday 10th April for five weeks - there are still one or two free places available. Please note the Junior group at KEGS will finish at 7.30pm for the five weeks that the course is on.

Poolside

We remain in need of poolside helpers/teachers and coaches - training available

KEBS noticeboard

A couple of small, but important things. If you do not see the noticeboard poolside at KEBS can you please take it from store cupboard to poolside - especially Friday and Sunday learners sessions. Also for health and safety reasons we often need help putting in and taking out the lane ropes because really swimmers and poolside lifeguards (coaches) should not have that distraction - thanks for your help.

Loz's myth buster - goggles

The reason your child's goggles are leaking is not because they need to be tightened (this can often make things worse) but because they do not fit properly. When buying goggles forget everything else except the fit which is found by:

press the goggles firmly around your eyes, without using the strap. Release the goggles and see if they stay stuck for a few seconds. If they fall off right away, then they are not the right shape for your eyes. If they stay stuck for a few seconds, then they are a good fit.

Simples and will save red eyes, tears and panda eyes. It can be a daunting experience finding the right ones, but all good sports shops (Tri 1st, Harborne sports, John Lewis , Bham Uni shop for example) will let you try them on first and it is really important .

Snow joke!

Thanks for your understanding during the recent bad weather. Please spare a thought and a scarf, hat etc for our Aussie mom Carolyn Burden - the only parent I have ever seen look cold on poolside. I don't think she is enjoying the snow.
